Lufthansa Business Class: The Reliable Benchmark

Lufthansa doesn't generate the excitement of Gulf carriers or the reverence of Asian airlines. What it generates is consistency. The seat is reliable, the lounge network is extensive, the punctuality is genuine, and the product does exactly what it says. For frequent business travellers, this is often exactly what's wanted.

The Seat

Lufthansa's long-haul Business Class features a lie-flat seat in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration — direct aisle access from every seat. The seat converts to a 78-inch flat bed. The design is functional rather than inspired: the storage is adequate, the IFE screen is large, and the seat mechanism works smoothly.

The seat width is competitive. The privacy is reasonable without suite walls. There's nothing surprising here, and on a long flight, that's not necessarily a problem.

The Lounges at Frankfurt

Frankfurt is Lufthansa's primary hub, and the lounge network there is one of the best in Europe for connectivity. The Business Lounge offers good food, shower facilities, and reliable Wi-Fi. The Senator Lounge (status-based) and the First Class Terminal (accessible with a first class ticket) step up further. For a carrier whose hub is a major transit point, the lounge experience matters — and Lufthansa delivers it consistently.

The Food

The catering on Lufthansa long-haul is competent. The German bread service is a genuine highlight — a cart comes through with multiple varieties of proper bread, and it's better than it sounds. The wine selection is solid, with a focus on German and Austrian wines that's both appropriate and interesting.

Don't expect the culinary ambition of Singapore or Qatar. Do expect well-prepared food that won't disappoint.

Short-Haul vs Long-Haul

Worth noting: Lufthansa Business Class on short-haul European routes is simply an economy seat with the middle seat blocked. No lie-flat, no premium catering. This guide covers long-haul only. If you're flying Frankfurt to London, "business class" means priority boarding and a wider seat, not a premium product.

The Verdict

Lufthansa scores 7.0. It's the benchmark product — the thing you compare everything else against, rather than the thing you choose for the experience itself. If you're connecting through Frankfurt, have status, or are travelling on a corporate account that specifies Lufthansa, it's a solid and reliable choice. As a first-timer experience specifically chosen for the journey, Gulf and Asian carriers offer more for broadly similar prices.
